Periodontal Disease – Gum disease

Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is the situation where plaque and tartar have gone out of control. There are patients out there who are afraid to go to the dentist or don’t have time or money to go to the dentist, and they let that plaque and bacteria form on their teeth.

If not cleaned off, plaque and bacteria will mineralize and get stuck on your teeth, causing it to grow into the gum tissue and cause periodontal disease. That means that your gums get affected where the attachment of the gums to the teeth become loose. The gum peels off or loosens because of the tartar that has built up. The condition can go from mild to moderate or severe, where there is no attachment of the gum and where the bone starts melting away.

Severe periodontitis is where teeth are completely loosened up in a patient’s mouth and the teeth move around with no support, no bone, and no gum. Severe cases of gum disease lead to loose teeth and extremely bad breath. Bad breath happens when plaque, tartar, and bacteria build up causing a terrible smell that you can’t get rid of.

The extent of plaque in the mouth is also linked to heart disease because the plaque can get into your blood stream, which can then cause problems to the heart, as well as heart attacks.

I think of this phrase, “Healthy mouth, healthy body” when it comes to maintaining good oral health. If your mouth isn’t healthy, your body might not be either. It is vital to clean and keep plaque and tartar off your teeth. For patients who brush their teeth and their gums bleed, I ask them, ‘what if you wash your hands and your hands are bleeding, wouldn’t you see a doctor?’ Bleeding gums are not normal, and you should consult your dentist. Bleeding gums are a sign of active periodontitis in your mouth.

Remember that keeping your mouth clean, being free of plaque and tartar, can affect your whole body and your whole system.
