Dental Care
Basic dental care is essentially brushing your teeth a minimum of twice a day. The main cause of cavities or caries is and always will be plaque, and the bacteria in the plaque. Bacteria and plaque build up when you don’t properly clean your teeth. They will eat away at the enamel and cause cavities. The only way to get rid of that bacteria and plaque is proper dental care at home. Each person’s dental needs and conditions are different, and some may require more frequent cleaning than others. Some people may have to brush more often than twice a day.
Dental care is also not just brushing and flossing. Keeping your teeth clean and healthy means frequent brushing, flossing, and regular visits to the dentist, which I recommend be done at least every six months. I give the analogy to my patients whenever we talk about taking care of our teeth. You get your oil changed in your automobile and service it regularly to make sure that it’s running properly, so why wouldn’t you do that with your teeth? Regular check ups, maintenance, and good home care all tie into good dental care. That’s what we tell all our patients.
Other Treatments Offered At Our Office
Apart from the treatments mentioned previously, we also offer treatment for TMJ problems, which includes joint pain or clicking or popping of the mouth joints. This causes an imbalance in the structure of the mouth, teeth, muscles, and joints are not harmonious with each other. People with TMJ problems may have bites that are way off, and some teeth may be crooked. These things affect the way you chew and digest your food, and thus lead to other health complications.
Severe bruxism, which is the grinding of the teeth, can also cause TMJ dysfunction. We treat that here with a TMJ appliance or splint which can correct the problem. Then we look at what is causing the mouth and joint pain, and look at the structure of the teeth. After that we may recommend crowns and bridges, or invisible braces to straighten teeth.
We also treat sleep apnea here in our office. Sleep apnea constrains the airway, which leads to the patient not getting enough sleep because of the blocked airway. We have resources where we can fabricate a mouth piece for sufferers that help open that airway and keep the tongue down.
