Crowns and Bridges
A crown becomes necessary if a patient has fractured a tooth, or if there has been some type of breakdown where a large filling would not be a proper restoration. When a tooth is broken down and cannot be replaced effectively with a filling, then you need a crown. A crown provides the tooth with full coverage to protect it from further damage. We see this a lot in broken down molar teeth where old silver amalgam restorations have been in place for years. In such cases, the tooth has broken off, the filling has broken off, and there may be a large extent of decay. We look out for those situations when first examining the patient. Gold is a good standard for dental crowns because it lasts forever. It is also easily accepted by the mouth and the surrounding tissue. My philosophy is to treat the patient with results that will last for quite a long time.
Taking Care of Dental Crowns
A crowned tooth is like a real tooth; there is no difference. You should brush and floss around the tooth just as you would your real teeth, and also go in to visit your dentist for regular checkups. The same goes for bridges.
A bridge is a permanent solution and can be used to replace one, two, or three missing teeth. Bridges are anchored to the adjacent teeth, and much like a bridge provides a connection from one side to another, a dental bridge does the same thing using the adjacent teeth.
When indicating dental bridges, if the adjacent teeth are not healthy and breaking down as well, a dental implant might help to provide firmer support. This again, can be determined during the initial examination and the patient will be able to decide based on various factors that may include cost and time for preparation.
Dental bridges are also cleaned the same way as regular teeth, you should expect to brush and floss under the bridge to avoid bacteria build up which can lead to decay and gum disease.
